Favorites
1. What is your favorite color? Blue.
2. Favorite food? Cheese.
3. Favorite movie of all time? Chocolat.
4. Favorite song? It's Time by Imagine Dragons.
5. Favorite book of all time? Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier.

All about Writing
1. How did your interest in writing originated?
I wish I had a cool answer for this, but the truth is, it's always been there! As a child I would come home from school, pull out my plastic bin full of markers and paper, and arrange everything around me in a circle. I would then fold some paper in half, staple the side three times, and proceed to fill the white spaces with words and pictures. It only got worse as I grew older.

2. What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
If a story really has me in it's grips, I'm writing every day whenever I can. And my friends forget what I look like.

3. Do you work with outline or just write?
When I'm writing a book under contract, I definitely outline. If I'm writing a book no one knows about, I'm a pantser!

4. What was the hardest part in writing your book? The easiest?
The hardest part was the ending, actually. I make so many adjustments and changes, you would be shocked to read the original. But I'm so, so happy with how it turned out. The easiest part was Elizabeth's voice! She came so naturally to me.

5. What do you like to do when you're not writing?
Well, I watch way too much television. Ask me about a show and I've probably seen it. I love reading, of course, and spending time with friends. They're probably where all my book sales come from! ;)

Finish the sentence
1. The difference between fiction and reality is almost nonexistent!
2. Research is what I'm doing when I watch TV.
3. I can write better when the internet is unplugged.
4. Sleep is an excellent way to come up with new ideas.
5. A room without a book is desolate.

Author's Slambook: Kendare Blake + Giveaway

Tuesday, September 10, 2013

Author Bio
Website | Twitter | Facebook | Goodreads

Kendare Blake writes stuff. Most of it is dark and twisted but her parents seem to like it anyway and do not at all think it relates to her mental state or how she was raised. One time, she tried to beat the closing doors on the London subway and failed. She was stuck in between sandwich-style and almost lost her backpack. It hurt. A lot.

Favorites
1. What is your favorite color? Blue!
2. Favorite food? Unfair question. I love all food.
3. Favorite movie of all time? Also unfair question. I would have to say...the Before Sunrise cycle. Or, Scent of a Woman. Or...Waynes World.
4. Favorite song? This one is hard too! What's with you? :) Mmm, I like most things by Fiona Apple. I like a good beat. Right now there's a song I like about smoking it if you've got it. Don't know who it's by.
5. Favorite book of all time? Impossible question! I could go with The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, by Milan Kundera. Or, The Mists of Avalon, by Marion Zimmer Bradley. Or, N0S4A2, by Joe Hill. Or IT, by Joe Hill's dad.
All about Writing
1. How did your interest in writing originated?
Reading. I loved hearing stories and reading stories when I was a kid. Fictional worlds were my favorite worlds.

2. What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
Depends on the book. Every one behaves differently. The one I'm working on now, I can only manage around a thousand words a day. Maybe three days a week.

3. Do you work with outline or just write?
I just write. But I usually have an idea of what's going to happen in the next chapter, maybe the chapter after that. Not always.

4. What was the hardest part in writing your book? The easiest?
The easiest is the beginning, and the ending. The middle. Just. Blows.

5. What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I like to read (obviously) , eat (a lot), go to parks and pretty places, hike a little, play some bad tennis, hang with friends.

Finish the sentence
1. The difference between fiction and reality is boredom.
2. Research is what I'm doing when I don't know the things I want to know.
3. I can write better when there are no distractions.
4. Sleep is an excellent way to pass the time.
5. A room without a book is ABSOLUTE CRAP!

Title: Antigoddess (Goddess War #1)
Genre/s: Young Adult,
Publisher: Tor Teen
Date Published: September 10, 2013
Buy: Amazon | Barnes&Nobles | Book Depo

Synopsis

The Goddess War begins in Antigoddess, the first installment of the new series by acclaimed author of Anna Dressed in Blood, Kendare Blake.

Old Gods never die…

Or so Athena thought. But then the feathers started sprouting beneath her skin, invading her lungs like a strange cancer, and Hermes showed up with a fever eating away his flesh. So much for living a quiet eternity in perpetual health.

Desperately seeking the cause of their slow, miserable deaths, Athena and Hermes travel the world, gathering allies and discovering enemies both new and old. Their search leads them to Cassandra—an ordinary girl who was once an extraordinary prophetess, protected and loved by a god.

These days, Cassandra doesn’t involve herself in the business of gods—in fact, she doesn’t even know they exist. But she could be the key in a war that is only just beginning.

Because Hera, the queen of the gods, has aligned herself with other of the ancient Olympians, who are killing off rivals in an attempt to prolong their own lives. But these anti-gods have become corrupted in their desperation to survive, horrific caricatures of their former glory. Athena will need every advantage she can get, because immortals don’t just flicker out.

Every one of them dies in their own way. Some choke on feathers. Others become monsters. All of them rage against their last breath.

The Goddess War is about to begin.

All about Writing
1. How did your interest in writing originated?

I like to write in the morning. I’m most productive then. I usually write about 2-3 hours (or as long as it takes to get at least 1500 words)

Favorites
1. What is your favorite color? Blue
2. Favorite food? Steamed Crabs (although I only get to eat them when I visit Maryland)
3. Favorite movie of all time? The Hunger Games
4. Favorite song? Blackbird by the Beatles
5. Favorite book of all time? The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

All about Writing
1. How did your interest in writing originated?
I used to fangirl over tv shows like The X-Files when I was in high school. So I started off reading a ton of fan fiction and then I began writing some too.

2. What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
I wake up in the morning, exercise with XBox Kinect (I dance) and then I'll check emails, grab breakfast and spend the rest of the day writing. I need complete silence when I write and I try to have as little interruptions and distractions as possible.

3. Do you work with outline or just write?
When I start a new book I have a basic outline of where I want the story to go. As I'm writing though, it changes and I just go with it.

4. What was the hardest part in writing your book? The easiest?
The hardest part is making the characters suffer. It's hard to put your characters through painful situations, especially when you always want to strive towards that happily ever after. It has to be done though and often those situations make your characters stronger. The easiest part is probably the romance.

5. What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I love to read young adult novels, blog, hang out with friends, play board games and video games. I also am a huge fan girl when it comes to tv shows or books that I love.

Finish the Sentence
1. The difference between fiction and reality is fiction almost always has a happy ending. Real life doesn’t.
2. Research is what I'm doing when I'm in the middle of writing a chapter and I want to make sure what a character says or does is accurate.
3. I can write better when the room is completely silent.
4. Sleep is an excellent way to relax and make sure I'm ready to write tomorrow.
5. A room without a book is lacking creativity.

Author's Slambook: Jessica Verdi, author of My Life After Now

Author Bio:

Her second novel, The Summer I Wasn't Me, will be published April 2014. Follow Jess on Twitter @JessVerdi.

Favorites
1. What is your favorite color? Green
2. Favorite food? Any kind of vegetarian soup
3. Favorite movie of all time? This is a tough one -- if I can only pick one, I'll have to go with Clueless
4. Favorite song? Another tough one. Right now I'd have to go with "Philosophy" by Ben Folds Five
5. Favorite book of all time? Ahhh this one's the hardest of all! Let's go with The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

All about Writing
1. How did your interest in writing originate?
It was actually a somewhat natural transition from my previous career -- acting. I loved telling stories, but was getting frustrated with all the waiting around, hoping to be cast in a show. I started writing because I was able to be creative and express myself -- but on my own terms, which was so liberating.

2. What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
Well, I have a full time job in addition to my writing career. I work as an editor for a romance novel publisher. So all day long I'm sitting in front of Microsoft Word, working on other people's books, so working on my book is the last thing I want to do at the end of the day -- I need to get away from the computer! So I work on my writing projects all day Saturday and Sunday, every single weekend.

3. Do you work with outline or just write?
I usually start with a "brainstorm," where I just put down anything I already know about the story down in a big list. Anything from the characters' names and ages all the way through early ideas for scenes. Then, with all that in my mind, I feel better equipped to just start writing, outline-less. My favorite thing is when the story surprises me and takes me in directions I didn't know I was going until it comes through my fingers and onto the page.

4. What was the hardest part in writing your book? The easiest?
The hardest part was the research process -- the story is about a teenage girl who learns she is HIV-positive, so I had to do a ton of research on not only the virus itself, but also about the testing clinic environment, how doctor's office visits would go, and what support groups are like. The easiest part was everything having to do with theater -- Lucy is a theater nerd, like I was in high school, so it was so much fun to get to write about musicals and auditions and all that stuff.

5. What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I'm addicted to television. :) I love getting lost in my favorite TV series -- it's like reading a book or watching a movie, but much deeper in a way, because you get to stick with these characters and follow their journeys season after season, year after year.

Finish the sentence
1. The difference between fiction and reality is... I don't necessarily think there is a difference! I write fictional stories about real life, so those lines are pretty blurred for me.
2. Research is what I'm doing when... I feel I'm not informed enough to continue working on a story. Often I'll stop mid-sentence and have to stop and research something or other. It can be frustrating, to throw a roadblock in the creative flow like that, but it's all part of the writing process.
3. I can write better when... I'm well rested and in a good mood!
4. Sleep is an excellent way to... reboot and get ready for the next day of writing!
5. A room without a book is... incomplete.

Title: Anatomy of a Boyfriend (Anatomy #1)
Genre/s: YA/NA, Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Date Published: January 9, 2007
Buy: Amazon | Barnes&Nobles | Book Depo

Synopsis:

Before this all happened, the closest I'd ever come to getting physical with a guy was playing the board game Operation. Okay, so maybe that sounds pathetic, but it's not like there were any guys at my high school who I cared to share more than three words with, let alone my body.

Then I met Wes, a track star senior from across town. Maybe it was his soulful blue eyes, or maybe my hormones just started raging. Either way, I was hooked. And after a while, he was too. I couldn't believe how intense my feelings became, or the fact that I was seeing—and touching—parts of the body I'd only read about in my Gray's Anatomy textbook. You could say Wes and I experienced a lot of firsts together that spring. It was scary. It was fun. It was love.

And then came the fall.

Title: Anatomy of a Single Girl (Anatomy #2)
Genre/s: YA/NA, Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Date Published: January 8, 2013
Buy: Amazon | Barnes&Nobles | Book Depo

Synopsis:

With Judy Blume-like honesty and insight, this sequel to Anatomy of a Boyfriend is about life after first love--romance, sex, friendship, family, and the ups and downs of life as a single girl.

After everything that happened—my first boyfriend, my first time, my first breakup—jumping back into the dating game seemed like the least healthy thing I could do. It’s not that I didn’t want to fall in love again, since that’s about the best feeling ever. But as a busy college premed still raw from heartbreak, which is the worst feeling ever, I figured I’d lie low for a while. Of course, as soon as I stopped looking for someone, an impossibly amazing—and devastatingly cute—guy came along, and I learned that having a new boyfriend is the quickest way to recover from losing your old one.

The moment we got together, all my preconceptions about romance and sex were turned upside down. I discovered physical and emotional firsts I never knew existed. I learned to let go of my past by living in the present. It was thrilling. It was hot. It was just what the doctor ordered.

But I couldn’t avoid my future forever.

In Daria Snadowsky’s daring follow-up to Anatomy of a Boyfriend, eighteen-year-old Dominique explores the relationship between love and lust, and the friendships that see us through.
