Crewel Blog Tour: Review and Scavenger Hunt

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Today, we are celebrating the most momentous release day of Crewel! I am so honored to be one of  the Crewel Street Team and be a part of this blog tour.

Title: Crewel
Author: Gennifer Albin
Genre/s: Young Adult, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Romance

Synopsis:

Incapable. Awkward. Artless.

That’s what the other girls whisper behind her back. But sixteen year-old Adelice Lewys has a secret: she wants to fail.

Gifted with the ability to weave time with matter, she’s exactly what the Guild is looking for, and in the world of Arras, being chosen as a Spinster is everything a girl could want. It means privilege, eternal beauty, and being something other than a secretary. It also means the power to embroider the very fabric of life. But if controlling what people eat, where they live and how many children they have is the price of having it all, Adelice isn’t interested.

Not that her feelings matter, because she slipped and wove a moment at testing, and they’re coming for her—tonight.

Now she has one hour to eat her mom’s overcooked pot roast. One hour to listen to her sister’s academy gossip and laugh at her Dad’s stupid jokes. One hour to pretend everything’s okay. And one hour to escape.

Because once you become a Spinster, there’s no turning back.

My Thoughts:

If only I have a Books For YA Award for Most Creative World-Building, I would definitely give it to Crewel. The World of Arras is so complex on how it functions that you have to pay close attention to it or you might miss what's going on. And believe me, you don't want to do that.

Like every dystopian world, Arras has a totalitarian government who controlled people's lives, from the food they eat to the child they will have. So why did I say that it has the most create world-building if it was just like every other dystopian novel? Well, what I actually mean is Crewel has a literal world-building. They build their world, from the weather to the landscape of the mountains, from the waves in the ocean to every single fish in the sea. All is created and manipulated and those people who can do this are called Spinsters.

You see, everything in Arras is represented by a special thread and it is the Spinsters' work to weave those threads into the fabric of Arras and maintain its order. But not everyone can have this privilege.  Only girls who can pass the Eligibility test can train to become a Spinster. And almost every girl wanted to be a Spinster except for Adelice.

Ever since she was 8, Adelice knew that she can weave anything, even without a loom and as soon as her parents realize this, they forbid her to show her abilities to everyone else. They are afraid that the Guild might take her away and will never come back. All her life, they trained her to be clumsy, to fail her Eligibility Test. But when Adelice, failed to fail, she and her family decided to run away but they were eventually caught.

Adelice then went to live and train along with the other Eligibles and was blackmailed that that they will kill Amie(her younger sister) if she do something stupid. Now, training to become a Spinster, Adelice realizes that being a Spinster is not all glitz and glamour like she thought it would be.

Adelice is so much like Katniss Everdeen of the Hunger Games. I can't help myself from seeing their similarities. First of all, they both love their younger sister so much that they will give up their lives for them. Secondly, they are both clever, strong-willed young women and they stand to what they believe in. And lastly, they both experienced the grief of losing a friend. But Adelice has a sarcastic sense of humor that Katniss never had. Nevertheless, I like them both.

The journey I experienced with Adelice is priceless. Gennifer Albin intricately woven a masterpiece in her debut novel. Crewel is a story you wouldn't want to miss.
