Songs to Get Over You Blog Tour: Double Book Review

Tuesday, March 01, 2016

Hey, everyone! How you've been? Well, I'm glad you're still dropping by my virtual abode. Today, I'm  breaking my hiatus for a double book review. Yes, you heard that right! Two review in one blog post. So here it goes.

Title: Songs of Our Break-Up (Playlist #1)
Author: Jay E. Tria
Genre/s: NA Contemporary Romance
Released Date: August 22, 2015
Buy on Amazon | Buqo
Synopsis:

Every breakup has its playlist.

How do you get over a seven-year relationship? 21-year-old Jill is trying to find out. But moving on is a harder job when Kim, her ex-boyfriend, is the lead guitarist of the band, and Jill is the vocalist. Every song they play together feels like slicing open a barely healed tattoo.

Jill’s best friend Miki says she will be out of this gloom soon. Breakups have a probation period, he says. Jill is on the last month of hers and Miki is patiently keeping her company.

But the real silver lining is Shinta. Having a hot Japanese actor friend in times like these is a welcome distraction. This gorgeous celebrity has been defying time zones and distance through the years to be there for Jill. Now he is here, physically present, and together he and Jill go through old lyrics, vivid memories, walks in the rain, and bottles of beer. Together they try to answer the question: what do you do when forever ends?

Review:

Songs of Our Break Up is the story of Jill, vocalist and guitarist of the indie band, Trainman, as she went through the three-months probation period of her break-up with their lead guitarist, Kim. Complicated, was a weak word to describe their relationship and Songs of Our Break-Up summed up, beautifully, the messy stages of moving on and falling in love again.

There were a lot of things I love about this book; the memorable characters, the silly bantering, the atmosphere of the indie music scene and the lyrics of Trainman's album. I wish the Trainman album was real because the lyrics just speaks volume. Even without the melody, it already has a huge effect on me. How much more if someone put some notes and sang it? I'd probably cry myself to sleep while listening to their album.

Jill was all of us as she went through the process of moving on, but failing a few times because she still has to be around her ex. Good thing she has Shinta (the super charming and handsome AF Japanese actor who used to be their fan but now, became their friend) and Miki (their rhythm guitarist and her best friend who is secretly in love with her). Between the two, I'm rooting for Miki. It was heart-breaking to see his efforts were disregarded yet he's still waiting in the wings.  But Shinta is awesome, too, don't get me wrong. He was the sliver of Japanese sunshine in Jill's gloomy world.

I was a bit confused with the non-linear narration, though. I guess, I'm just not used to it and it sometimes threw me off of my reading trance. But that's just a minor issue. Overall, it was a good and unique contemporary story that I would highly recommend to anyone who likes contemporary story about music and moving on.

Rating:

P.S.
Also watch this live reading of Songs of Our Break-Up because if you're not yet convinced by my review, I'm sure this will.

Title: Songs to Get Over You (Playlist #2)
Author: Jay E. Tria

Genre/s: NA Contemporary Romance

Released Date: February 29, 2016
Buy on Amazon | Buqo
Synopsis:

It's harder to get over someone who was never really yours.

They say rock stars get all the girls. But Miki knows that's not always true. He, for one, though the guitarist of popular indie band Trainman, just can't seem to get the girl. It's kind of his fault, really. No one told him to fall in love with Jill. No one told him to stand still and watch as she moved on from a terrible breakup into the arms of another guy—a Japanese celebrity with the face of an angel and the body of a god.

So when someone else comes along, someone who finds him cute, smart, and funny (sometimes in the haha sort of way), will Miki finally move on? Or will he continue to pine for Jill?
Review:

When I heard that the second book in the Playlist series is Miki's story, I immediately squee. I love Miki but I pity his unrequited love for Jill. He's such a caring and loving guy and he doesn't deserve to be in the friend-zone. Good thing, Ana saved him from that place.

"She's cute and perky and obviously socially adept." Jill paused as she processed this. "She's like the anti-me. That's so strange. But then she's also tall and skinny and moves like a boy, like me." - Songs of Our Break-Up

Ana was Miki's classmate in one of his elective classes in college. She's a CPA and loves to work as a corporate slave. She's not the anti-Jill for me now that I read this story, I think she's the version of a left-brain-dominant Jill that doesn't have hung-ups and emotional baggage.  She's pretty cool, sweet and patient. She knew Miki's secret feelings for Jill and she waited and taught him how to break the habit of pining for his best friend.

Their relationship was more realiztic than the first book but is as beautiful. I was really happy that Miki finally found someone. Overall, it's a swoon-worthy sequel to the Playlist series.

Cut Me Free Blog Tour: Interview and Giveaway

Wednesday, January 21, 2015

I have a very special post for today. It's special not because this is my first ever post this 2015. It's not also special because it's a part of a blog tour (which you all know, I only do for books I'm really excited for and/or books I love). No. This post is special because it's about a book unlike any other. It delves deeper than your average suspense thriller and I'm very happy to have J.R. Johansson here for an interview.

Title: Cut Me Free
Author: J.R. Johansson
Publisher: Farrar, Strous & Giroux (BYR)
Publication Date: January 27, 2015

That’s when Charlotte begins to receive the threatening notes left in her apartment—without a trace of entry. As the messages grow more menacing, she doesn’t just need to uncover who is leaving them; she needs to stop whoever it is before anyone else she loves ends up dead.

Interview

1. What makes Cut Me Free different from your Night Walkers series, aside from their genre?

Cut Me Free is darker in theme and topics and set in the real world. They both have a similar pace and thriller tone, but I'd say that Cut Me Free is a little scarier.

2. What are Charlotte's greatest strength and her weaknesses?

Her greatest strength is her resilience and her ability to never give up. Her greatest weakness is her inability to forgive herself and her struggle with letting anyone help her or get close to her.

3. While you were in the process of writing this book, have you ever doubt yourself or second guess the reason why you are writing this story. If yes, how did you overcome those obstacles?

I never doubted this story, but I did struggle with it. Abuse of any kind is a very difficult subject to talk about...but at the same time, it's very important that we do talk about it. That fact drove me forward. I read stories of kids who've been abused and many never really tried to hide it, but still no one ever asked them if they needed help. I wanted to write the story of a victim who wasn't only a victim. I want us to be more aware of the world around us. There are kids out there that need help and it is important we be able to see and be ready to help.

4. Everything has an origin story. It might started out as a thought, a dialogue or news you heard, a conversation with a friend, or an idea that has been plaguing your brain for quite some time. So tell us, what's Cut Me Free's origin story? And what made you decide to write it?

Cut Me Free actually started as a writing prompt in a critique group. Someone suggested that I should write a story about an attic with a creepy puppet in it. At the same time, I had been reading about child trafficking and how it's far more common than many realize. Somehow I ended up blending those two stories together and the puppet took on a different meaning. The moment I wrote the first page (which is still the first page) and had Piper in the heart of Philadelphia and how differently she saw everything than the people around her--in that instant, I knew I had to write this book.

5. What are the things you learned or discovered after writing this book?

I've already had readers reach out to me who were victims of abuse. They were grateful to see a victim who struggled with terrible things, but it didn't somehow make her weak. It took her a long time to get out and the ramifications of what happened to her never went away, but she didn't let her abusers steal her whole life. It's been really gratifying to see the book touch people. I'm so happy to be a part of that.

Mojave Green Blog Tour: Guest Interview and Giveaway

Wednesday, October 08, 2014

It's been a while since I participated in any blog tour so today is very special. I now have on the blog the authors of the Dimensions of Death series which I'm a huge fan of. So without further ado, I introduce you to Berk and Andy, The Brothers Washburn.

Andy and Berk:
Pitch Green and Mojave Green are the first two books in The Dimensions in Death young adult horror series. Based on a scary story we used to tell as kids to our siblings and friends, these books combine horror, suspense and mystery, moving at a breathtaking pace as our protagonists fight for their lives while they battle a monstrous evil presence hiding in and around an old, deserted mansion in a small mining town, located near Death Valley in a desolate part of the Mojave Desert.

The mansion was built almost a hundred years ago by an eccentric genius, who got funding and structural specifications from a clandestine source of ancient knowledge and wealth. One night the genius was mysteriously slaughtered, and ever since, children and other defenseless animals in the Trona area have been disappearing without a trace on a regular basis. In the first book, we meet two teenagers, Camm and Cal, who are destined by wit, pluck and luck (not always good) to become the balancing force against the unearthly predator, who came to call the mansion home. Our heroes are hurled from one scene of horror to the next. Though their intentions are good, they don’t understand what they are facing, and by the end of the first book, a door has been left open to predations on an even grander scale.

In the second book, a call from her best friend, Cal, brings news Camm had hoped never to hear. Children are again disappearing from Trona. Has the unnatural creature they killed last year returned to life or has the ancient Searles Mansion spawned a new menace? Ignoring dire warnings from federal agents, the pair take a road trip home with unsuspecting school friends in tow and discover the situation has gotten worse. With monstrous predators seemingly coming out of nowhere, enigmatic forces tear the friends apart, pulling Cal into another world, where his chances of survival are slim. Finally coming to terms with her feelings for Cal, Camm desperately seeks help where she can, even from the dead, but can a rogue agent and other wary misfits help her uncover the long-lost secrets that she needs to rescue Cal and stop the inter-dimensional attacks? The destiny of her own world may lie in Camm’s young hands.

How different is it writing your sophomore novel, Mojave Green, to your first novel, Pitch Green? Is there a lot of pressure to make this better than your first book?

Writing the second book was a completely different experience for us as co-authors than was the first book. The first book was based on a childhood story that we had been telling for years, and the basic plot elements already existed. The second book is a brand new story that has never existed before. It was created from scratch in the last couple years. As co-authors we had to agree on a whole new plot and work out the kinks in a whole new story.

In both cases, we were under pressure to make the story as good as possible. We didn’t think in terms of one story being better than the other, but we are definitely excited with the Mojave Green story.

What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing this book to life?

In addition to a careful research of applicable geography, we had to do an in-depth research of basic principles of astro-physics since Mojave Green answers many of the questions raised in the first book. But remember, this is not science fiction. This is horror based on pseudo-science rather than mysticism.

What was your favorite scene/s in Mojave Green? Can you tell us without giving a spoiler?

Some of our favorite scenes in book two take place as Camm and Cal confront the new predators spawned by the collapse of the guardian systems that were originally built into the mansion.

What was your most favorite moment/s in this whole experience of writing and promoting your book?

Some of our favorite moments in this whole book-selling process come as we are able to interact with a few of our fans at book signings and other author events. We’re getting excited now for book three, which we anticipate will up the ante over what was presented in the first two books, but first we’re interested in hearing what you think of Mojave Green.

What should your fans(including myself) expect in Mojave Green?

Our fans can expect a faster moving, broader ranging story in the second book, which introduces new characters and covers more territory, both in terms of geography as well as emotions.

About the Authors:
Blog | Twitter | Facebook | Goodreads

A. L. Washburn and B. W. Washburn are brothers, licensed lawyers and full time writers, residing in Colorado and southern Utah. Growing up in a large family in Trona, California, a small mining community not far from Death Valley, they spent many happy days in their youth roaming the wastelands of the Mojave Desert. After living in South America at different times, each came back to finish graduate school and start separate careers. Living thousands of miles apart, they worked in different areas of the law, while raising their own large families.

Each has authored legal materials and professional articles, but after years of wandering in the wastelands of the law, their lifelong love of fiction, especially fantasy, science fiction and horror, brought them back together to write a new young adult horror series, beginning with Pitch Green and later Mojave Green. They have found there yet remain many untold wonders to be discovered in the unbounded realms of the imagination, especially as those realms unfold in the perilous wastelands of the Dimensions in Death.

Title: Mojave Green (Dimensions of Death #2)

Finally safe and far from the horror, the teenagers believe they have destroyed the monster—until they hear news that Trona’s children are still disappearing. Caught in the nightmare since her childhood, Camm feels personally responsible for the town’s children. As her life-long best friend, Cal feels responsible for Camm. With unsuspecting friends in tow, they return to warn the innocent people of Trona of the true nature of the creature.

But things have changed.

Death comes in a new form. The balance between dimensions is altered. Crossovers multiply. Trona is evacuated. Cal is pulled into another dimension. The situation spirals out of control.

Shadows of Valor Blog Tour: Interview + Giveaway

Tuesday, September 03, 2013

Today, we have a special interview with Elsie Park, the author of the Shadows of Valor, a novel which I totally love. Also at the end of this interview there's a huge blog-wide giveaway that you should enter. Anyway, without further ado, I would like to welcome on our blog, Elsie Park! *cue applause*

1. Can you tell us a little trivia about yourself?

As the daughter of a pediatrician, my dad delivered me at birth a the hospital in Hollywood, CA. (USA). COOL!

I’ve played soccer since I was 6 years old. I was the only girl to make the JV boys soccer team as a freshman in high school. My sophomore year, I was one of three girls who made the boys team. My junior and senior years of high school the school finally organized a girl’s soccer team, and I enjoyed playing with other sporty and talented girls.

I’ve played piano since I was 6 years old and have composed music from that age as well.

I grew up in the beautiful mountains of Oakhurst, California (USA) outside of Yosemite National Park where my main hobbies were reading, writing, playing piano, playing soccer, and drawing. After graduating high school, I moved to Utah (USA) to study zoology, botany and criminal justice at college. I paid my way through school first by working as a security guard, and then fighting fires as a wildland firefighter with the Forest Service. I took a year and a half hiatus from school to serve a religious mission for my church (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) in beautiful northern Italy and then returned to school. I entered the police force after graduation, but soon missed the appeal of firefighting, so I returned to that after a short while. A few years after I married my sweetheart, I dropped my adventurous careers for motherhood (something I’ll never regret doing). I have three wonderful girls less than eight years of age. They are the light of my life.

2. Describe Shadows of Valor in 5 words.

Intriguing, mysterious, betrayal, forgiveness, love

3. What made you write a historical novel? Are you a fan of the genre ever since?

I have always loved fantastical and historical stories about princesses, knights, pirates, Vikings, wizards, dragons, and anything adventurous in another time, especially intertwining a sweet love story. I don’t dislike contemporary stories, but since I’m already living a contemporary life, I often want to read about times and places far from my own. I like to get lost in worlds that I don’t experience everyday. I chose 1300 A.D. England because I like the clothing, and King Edward’s wool tax causing some people to smuggle their goods created a great backdrop for an exciting story.

And yes, I’m a fan of writing historical novels, even though it takes a lot of time and research.

4. When and how did the idea of Shadows of Valor come to you? What inspired you to write this book?

I’ve always loved books, reading and watching good movies (especially historicals), but I would often think of other ways I would have done a certain scene or ending if I didn’t necessarily like the way the author or director did it. My biggest inspiration originally came after several months of thinking that I really wanted to do something as a stay-at-home-mom other than changing diapers, dishes, laundry and errands, but I didn’t want to be taken FROM the home to do it. So when some adventurous medieval scenes invaded my head over a period of days, I thought, “Hey, that would make a good movie or an excellent story if coupled with a good plot.” So on a whim I jotted my ideas down and my first step to writing Shadows of Valor was taken.

5. What is your favorite scene to write in Shadows of Valor? Can you tell us without giving a spoiler?

I like the scene where Elsbeth and The Shadow first meet in the forest and neither of them know at first that the other is an acquaintance from the past. I also like the scenes where they banter back and forth on certain points of view. Reminds me of Elisabeth and Mr. Darcy in “Pride and Prejudice.”

6. Do you have any similarities with Elsbeth? If yes, what are they?

Absolutely. That’s the fun of writing my own stories. I can put a little piece of myself in them. I am a blue-eyed brunette, like Elsbeth, and my name, Elsie, sounds similar to Elsbeth, but that wasn’t on purpose. I just liked the name Elsbeth and thought it sounded medieval. I call her Beth in the story. Growing up, I didn’t have a lot of self-esteem for the way I looked. I didn’t like who I saw in the mirror because it didn’t fit what the world said was beautiful. You know . . . skinny figure, perfect hair, flawless face, no pimples. I know many children, especially teens, feel this way about themselves. Though my sweet parents consistently told me what a beautiful girl I was, that only went so far when I felt depressed that I didn’t look like the gorgeous women I saw in movies and magazines, or when boys didn’t look my way or never asked me out. It was hard to feel my true self-worth during the high school years. Women are bombarded everyday with the world’s view of what’s beautiful as they try to live up it in beauty tips, diets and weight loss. This is especially true with sweet mothers whose bellies have been stretched beyond elasticity because of numerous pregnancies. And unless they have a strong self image, inner strength, or significant other saying they love them just the way they are, the awful truth is that it’s really hard for them to feel good about themselves. A good self image is an issue for Elsbeth’s character because of her physical scars.

7. Tell us a bit about your journey to publication?

I started the story on a whim when I had a 10-month-old daughter. She is now 7 years old! I wrote the story and sent it out after a year to relatives who were brutally honest about it. It was hard to take, but I took their suggestions and made changes to my story. I joined the League of Utah Writer’s and attended writer’s conferences and grammar classes, taking notes, learning and applying what I learned to each rewrite. I did this for 6 years, sending my manuscript off to agents and publishers galore, only to receive rejection after rejection (and feeling down and depressed and eating a pound of chocolate after each one). Finally, after having my third baby, I heard of a meeting where a publisher named Jolly Fish Press would be visiting. I didn’t have time to go with three kids and with me still breastfeeding the newest one since she refused to take a bottle. With my husband working the midnight shift and sleeping during the day, it would extremely difficult to go. But something drew me to go regardless of the inconvenience. I managed to get a sitter for the older girls, but had to take the youngest one with me. I listened to Jolly Fish Press’ representative, Chris Loke (executive editor) while standing in the corner bouncing a baby up and down, feeling embarrassed that I had to bring her, almost leaving because she was fussy, and hoping I wasn’t being a distraction to everyone else. I almost cried right there because I felt self-conscious bringing my baby to the meeting, but I stayed the entire time and listened to this new publisher. After leaving the meeting, I went home and thought about sending my manuscript to them, but it took me a month or so to get it ready. But I’m glad I took that chance, I’m glad I went to the meeting despite the hassle, because Jolly Fish Press accepted the manuscript and after over a year of waiting on the publishing process, it’s finally being released nationwide September 7, 2013. I can’t be more excited that this has happened. It’s a dream come true and a testimony that no matter your circumstance, you can write a story and through perseverance, have it published. Never give up!

8. What was the hardest part in writing this book? The easiest?

The hardest part was all the research on medieval England I had to do and the time it took to do it. The easiest part was probably the dialogue. I really enjoyed writing the dialogues. Writing three ballads for the story also came reasonably easy to me with my piano background. Those were really fun! At least one of the songs will be added as an addendum to the story, and possible all three, but I don’t know yet.

9. So far, what has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

One of the toughest criticisms was that the old English speech I’d written into my original version (and spent TONS of time researching and perfecting) wasn’t easy for readers to read and should be taken out completely. So that’s what I did.

The best compliment was that readers loved the dialogues between my characters as well as the description of the medieval world.

10. Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?

I truly hope readers enjoy the story of Elsbeth and Calan in SHADOWS OF VALOR. I hope they appreciate the medieval setting surrounding issues we share today. I’m working on another historical story for a couple of dynamic characters who share issues with the modern reader, but live in the medieval world.

Thank you for having me on you blog, Erleen! It’s been an honor and a privilege. These were great questions that I really enjoyed answering them.

Pitch Green Blog Tour: Interview and Giveaway

Saturday, March 16, 2013

I'm super excited today! Why? Because it's the release day for Pitch Green(which I totally loved) and we have The Brothers Washburn in our blog for interview. Let's welcome them with a round of applause. *cue applause*

(1.)   Tell us a little bit about yourself/selves?

We are two of 9 sons (16 children) who grew up in the Mojave desert near Death Valley.  For about 35 years, Berk has been a business lawyer working for international commercial finance companies in the mid-west.  For about 25 years, Andy has been a trial practice lawyer in Southern California.  We both have many years of formal writing experience.  While we have kept our law licenses current, we are now writing fiction full time.  We have always been story tellers, first to our siblings, then to our own children (Berk has 8 kids / Andy has 6 kids), and now to our grandkids.  Scary stories are a family specialty.  After we each moved to Colorado, we talked for some time about starting a business together.  A few years ago, Berk started writing a young adult science fiction series, so when Andy also tried his hand at writing fiction, it didn’t take long to come together as The Brothers Washburn on a young adult horror series.

(2.)   What inspired you to write Pitch Green?

Pitch Green is the first novel of The Dimensions in Death YA horror series.  Based on a scary story we used to tell our siblings and friends as kids, this first book combines horror, suspense and mystery at a breathtaking pace, as our protagonists battle to stay alive against an unseen evil presence lurking in an old mansion in a desolate mining town, deep in the Mojave Desert.  The general outline for Pitch Green came together one evening in November of 2010.  We were attending a writer’s seminar together in Manhattan and as we rode the subway from one end-of-the-line stop across town to the opposite end-of-the-line stop, and back again, we mapped out the basic elements we would need to expand the childhood story into a full-length novel.  Andy wrote the first rough draft, and then Berk took it over to edit and expand the tale.  In writing the first book, the ground work was laid for the sequels and prequels of that series.

(3.)   In 5 sentences, describe what Pitch Green is all about?

In Pitch Green, we meet two teenagers, Camm and Cal, who are destined by their wit, pluck and luck (not always good) to become the balancing force in this world against monstrous predators that keep showing up around a strange, old mansion.  They must make a stand against the mansion’s bloodthirsty guardian, any alien visitors who might want to come through the mansion in search of easy prey, and the forces of the U.S. Federal Government, who are using the mansion to access unlimited natural resources.  Camm is the brains, Cal is the muscle and together they make a formidable team when they decide to work together.  They are joined by FBI Agent Linda Allen, who is smart, resourceful and not easily intimidated by those protecting the government’s secrets.  They barely have time to catch their breaths or scratch the surface of what is happening and do not understand the nature of what they are facing, so by the end of the first book, they have left a doorway to horror wide open and unguarded.

(4.)   If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be?

Andy:  My three-year-old grandson, that kid has fun non-stop.
Berk:  There is a lot I would like to do as Barak Obama.

(5.)   If you could talk to Cal or Cammy, what would you say to them?

Andy:  Actually, I do talk to them, in a way.  I try to inculcate my advice to them in the way the story is written.  But I would tell them to keep living life for the love of being alive, and to get a college degree.
Berk:  I would say to each, “You found your soul mate, so quit fooling around.”

(6.)   Cammy and Cal's full names were really hilarious. If you could change your names, what would you call yourself/selves?

Andy:  I have thought about this a lot, because rappers and other celebrities change their names at some point.  Truthfully, I would not change my name at all.  It is still a little unclear to me why my parents named me "Anderson Lark," but I love my name and would not change it.
Berk:  Actually, I like my name and wouldn’t change it.

(7.)   Cammy and Cal did not forget the Halloween when Hughie was lost. What is your most . unforgettable Halloween experience?

Andy:  The first chapter in Pitch Green is based on a true story when I was trick or treating in Trona with my younger brother, Hugh, and he was wearing a sheet as a ghost costume.  As explained in the book, it didn't work well, and he did trip and bang his face.  Fortunately, he wasn't eaten, but when we got home and he pulled the sheet off, his right eye had swollen completely shut.  It was all black and blue, and there was blood running down his face.  I hadn't realized that he had been hurt.  My poor mom was horrified when she saw it and needless to say I was in serious trouble for not watching him more closely.
Berk:  Running through the streets of Trona one year avoiding the older kids who were trying to steal our candy.

(8.)   What did you learn from writing this book?

Andy:  How to write better fiction, and it reminded me of how much fun it was to be a teenager.
Berk:  While writing is fun, it requires long hours of hard work.

(9.)   What's your favorite part or scene in the book?

Andy:  The chapter where Camm is home alone at night and the Guardian creature comes to get her in her own home.
Berk:  When Camm finally figures out the secret weapon and brings down the Guardian in the mansion.

(10.)   Is there anything that you would like to say to the readers?

It's okay to be scared.  When you can feel your heart beating, at least you know it is still beating.  The second book, Mojave Green, is even scarier than Pitch Green.

Berk and Andy Washburn, aka "The Brothers Washburn," are both lawyers by profession, writers at heart. They grew up together roaming the wastelands of the Mojave Desert, where most of the series is set. Both brothers returned from lengthy and successful careers in the wastelands of the law to write YA horror stories based on the wastelands of their youth. They currently live north of Denver, Colorado. The Dimensions in Death series is merely the beginning of the ingenious and spine-tingling world of the Brothers Washburn. Be on your guard, people, there is a new Grimm in town.

Title: Pitch Green
Genre/s: Young Adult, Horror, Suspense Thriller
Synopsis:

Trona is a small, smoggy, mostly insignificant town in Colorado. Besides a booming chemical plant, the only thing that characterizes this dismal town is dirt, sagebrush, and an enormous abandoned mansion.

The mansion is, admittedly, the only notable addition to Trona, but it’s something everyone tries to avoid due to its creepy facade. Everyone except for Camm Smith, who is obsessed with the need to get inside.

Seven years earlier, as Camm herded a pack of little trick-or-treaters past the mansion, her young neighbor, Hugh, disappeared, becoming just one of many children who have vanished from Trona over the years without a trace. Now a senior in high school, Camm is still haunted by the old tragedy and is sure the answer to the mysterious disappearances lies hidden somewhere in the decaying mansion. Joining forces with her best friend, Cal, who also happens to be Hugh’s older brother, Camm naively begins a perilous search for the truth.

As things spiral quickly out of control, and others die, Camm and Cal discover it will take all their combined ingenuity to stay alive. An unseen creature, lurking deep within the bowels of the mansion, seems to have supernatural powers and is now hunting them. Making matters worse, they become entangled with hostile federal agents, who care only about keeping old secrets permanently hidden. Left with only their wit and seemingly ineffective firearms, they know they are running out of time. Unless they can make sense out of the few pieces of the puzzle they manage to unearth, the monster will certainly destroy them, and like so many others before them, they will be gone without a trace.

And to celebrate the release of Pitch Green's Release Day, they are giving away $25 Amazon Gift Card.

May the odds be ever in your favor :)

Title: Crewel
Author: Gennifer Albin
Genre/s: Young Adult, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Romance

Synopsis:

Incapable. Awkward. Artless.

That’s what the other girls whisper behind her back. But sixteen year-old Adelice Lewys has a secret: she wants to fail.

Gifted with the ability to weave time with matter, she’s exactly what the Guild is looking for, and in the world of Arras, being chosen as a Spinster is everything a girl could want. It means privilege, eternal beauty, and being something other than a secretary. It also means the power to embroider the very fabric of life. But if controlling what people eat, where they live and how many children they have is the price of having it all, Adelice isn’t interested.

Not that her feelings matter, because she slipped and wove a moment at testing, and they’re coming for her—tonight.

Now she has one hour to eat her mom’s overcooked pot roast. One hour to listen to her sister’s academy gossip and laugh at her Dad’s stupid jokes. One hour to pretend everything’s okay. And one hour to escape.

Because once you become a Spinster, there’s no turning back.

About the Author:

I like coffee. A lot. Writing gives me time to go get a cup without my kids. I like books as much as I like coffee, but it is easier to read with children hanging on you than drink coffee due to the threat of third degree burns. That's why coffee gets top billing in my intro: its unattainability.

I hold a Masters in English with a specialization in 18th century women's studies. While this is a highly marketable area of expertise, I stay home with my kids, which means my 3 year-old son uses correct grammar and doesn't burn down the house.

I have a ridiculously supportive husband who dreams of being included on a book jacket: "The author lives in Kansas with her husband, two children, and a Tuesday cat."

The Book of Paul Blog Tour: Guest Post and Giveaway

Wednesday, September 26, 2012
Please enjoy this guest post by Richard Long, author of the nail-biting supernatural thriller, The Book of Paul. Then read on to learn how you can win huge prizes as part of this blog tour, including a Kindle Fire, $300 in Amazon gift cards, 5 autographed copies of the book, and a look into your future through a free tarot reading performed by the author.

The Tarot

A guest post by Richard Long

Laura gave me my first tarot deck. It was a Crowley. A lot of people get creeped out by Crowley decks, much as they would have been creeped out by Crowley, I imagine. He called himself ‘The Great Beast.’ To me, he seemed more like a big joke.

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law!”

Stop it, you’re killing me.
***
You just read the opening lines of The Bone King, a prequel to The Book of Paul. They happen to be true. Laura gave me my first deck. I still have it and use it. In fact, I’ll be using it shortly to provide Skype tarot readings for two lucky winners of my Whirlwind Blog Tour. I’m looking forward to the readings. The winners? I suppose that depends on which cards come up.

Actually, I don’t give scary tarot readings, I just write about scary tarot readings. People have enough fear and stress in their lives without me throwing more gas on the flames. Besides, the three scariest trump cards--The Hanged Man, Death and The Tower--can all be interpreted in very unscary ways. Most of the time.

William, the narrator of The Book of Paul, lives in the East Village/Alphabet City of New York in the years before gentrification made it a much less fun and frightening place. He makes a living doing tarot and numerology readings, same as the author did at the time. Like me, he is also a collector, but that’s where the similarities end. He collects ancient occult codices, some covered in human skin. He collects other things that are even more…disturbing.

The Book of Paul Blog Tour: Interview and Giveaway

Tuesday, September 25, 2012
Please enjoy this interview with Richard Long, author of the nail-biting supernatural thriller, The Book of Paul. Then read on to learn how you can win huge prizes as part of this blog tour, including a Kindle Fire, $300 in Amazon gift cards, 5 autographed copies of the book, and a look into your future through a free tarot reading performed by the author.

1. Tell us about the spark of inspiration that eventually grew into The Book of Paul.

The initial inspiration for The Book of Paul came when I wrote the first line of the first chapter called Exercises: “He practiced smiling.” I wanted to explore a character who had been so damaged by childhood trauma that he could no longer feel compassion, joy, affection, and had, accordingly, committed all kinds of horrible acts. I wondered if such a person could ever regain his emotional capacity and be redeemed by love.

2. What was the research process like for this book (which can at times deal with some pretty heady and—frankly—grotesque goings-on)? Any horror stories to share?

There are many aspects to the story, so the research was really extensive. I love doing the research almost as much as the writing, so it’s a joy for me to read and learn so many new things. The creation mythology literally goes back to square one and builds from there, tracing the history of Hermetic and Gnostic philosophy, alchemy, druidism and pagan mythology-- particularly Egyptian, Greek and Celtic traditions. There’s also a strong science fiction element involving quantum physics, artificial intelligence, life extension and what’s known as The Singularity. Other lines of exploration involved Irish genealogy and what I call the pain culture: tattoos, elaborate piercings and body modifications.

I made some gruesome discoveries along the way. The most disturbing was the Extreme Body Modification website I stumbled upon, which is one of the most horrifying things I’ve ever seen. I first saw it in the early days of the Internet, which is pretty amazing in itself. I checked recently and it’s still there, though I didn’t have the stomach to peek inside again. I’m actually as squeamish as some of my readers about certain things, which is probably why the horror comes across so vividly. If something scares the hell out of me, it’s easy for me to convey that fear and revulsion.
